Academic and student terms

These terms are maintained by FeFe and apply in addition to our terms of service when you use FeFe as a student, a university researcher or a non-profit.

Last updated 4 August 2026

1. Who qualifies for the academic rate

  • Students enrolled at a recognised university or college, running research as part of their studies.
  • Staff at a university, college, hospital or public research institute.
  • Registered charities and non-profits carrying out non-commercial research.

The academic rate is a 42.9% platform fee instead of the 66.7% corporate rate, charged on top of participant rewards.

2. Who does not qualify

  • Companies, including university spin-outs and start-ups, running commercial research.
  • Market research, product testing or user research intended for a commercial product.
  • Work funded by a commercial sponsor that owns the results, even if run by an academic.

3. Proof of status

We may ask you to confirm your status, for example with an institutional email address, a student number, a supervisor's name or a charity registration number. Where we cannot verify status, we may move the account to the corporate rate. Claiming the academic rate when you do not qualify is a breach of these terms, and we may charge the difference or suspend the account.

4. Ethics approval

Student and academic researchers must hold whatever ethics approval their institution requires before launching a study, and must keep evidence of it. FeFe does not provide, review or substitute for ethics approval. See our research standards.

5. Supervision and liability

  • If you open an account in your own name, you are personally responsible for the study, the data collected and any money spent.
  • If you open an account for your institution, you confirm you are authorised to commit it and to spend its funds, and the institution is bound by our terms.
  • Students should agree with their supervisor who is responsible before spending. FeFe cannot mediate a dispute between a student and their institution.

6. Payment and refunds

Credit, fees and refunds work as set out in the researcher purchase and refund terms. If your department needs an invoice or a purchase order reference, email marianatmatthews@gmail.com before you top up.

7. Publication

You own your findings. You may state that participants were recruited through FeFe, and we would appreciate it, but you must not imply that FeFe designed, endorsed, approved or validated your study or its conclusions.
